Thirteen schools were in attendance at the KML hosted Charger Classic, the cross country teams’ first meet of the season. Nineteen boys and twenty-nine girls from KML suited up to race. The wonderful weather day definitely benefited all participants, especially the twenty-seven Charger athletes competing for the first time at the high school level. Both Varsity teams and the Boys JV team took 5th place finishes. The Girls Varsity tied for 4th, but lost the tiebreaker (the place finish of the 6th runners). The Girls JV ran to a 4th place finish. Team scores are the total of the first five finishers’ places after removing any place finishes for runners from incomplete teams.
Austin Schaff led the Boys Varsity, running to a 19th place medal finish in 18:58, more than a 2 minute improvement from his freshman time. Not far behind was Jacob Stoltz in 23rd with 19:13, also improving 15 seconds on last year’s time, freshman Austin Knoeck in 30th in 19:52, Micah Dykema 40th in 20:52, and Braden Ulm 44th in 21:16, not far off his freshman mark for the 5th team spot. Jacob Anderson (46th 21:51) improved his time for the third year in a row, finishing 47 seconds faster than last year, and more than 2 minutes faster than his sophomore year, taking the 6th varsity spot. Dominic Lietz (60th 24:15) improved 85 seconds from last year, finishing as the 7th runner. The Boys scored 144.
For the Varsity Girls, Naomi Gahan ran to an 11th place medal finish in 23:01 for a 27 second improvement from her freshman year. Ameillia Wedward followed her in 21st place in 24:04. Peyton Weber also ran to a course PR finishing in 37th with 25:05, 94 seconds faster than last year. Freshman Rachel Frey ran 5th for the team (25:40-42nd). Rachel Gahan (53rd 27:35) and Jessica Dippel (59th 29:18) were 6th and 7th for the team for a score of 116.
