“Oh My Zarling,” the Charger Boys are your 2018 Sectional Champions!! The Chargers are bound for State for the first time in school history!
This Saturday afternoon, the Chargers took down conference rival Waupun 53-48. Not only does the win earn a trip to the State Semi Finals but it also establishes conference superiority. KML and Waupun tied for the top spot and each was given the title of conference champion. However, the Chargers can put a little asterisk by that title knowing that with this win they are the true conference champions.
This Sectional championship had all the familiar drama and roller coaster of emotion that has been experienced in every playoff game to date. Even better though, all have had the same result, the Chargers came out 1-0. Waupun came out very strong to start the game and showed why they were rolling over their opponents in the games leading up to this. Waupun also managed to shoot an outstanding 7-12 from three point land in the first half. Waupun had a 34-21 lead and the Chargers on their heels heading into half time. Coming out of halftime, Waupun was already booking their hotels and planning their pep rally, but the Chargers were not done yet. Right out of the gate the Chargers elevated their defense to championship levels and put the ball in the bucket on the offensive end, finding themselves right back in the game only a few points behind Waupun within minutes of the second half starting. You could feel the tide of momentum start to pull away from the Waupun side of the gym and back to the sea of KML green. It wasn’t until a steal and monster two hand dunk by Solomon Zarling did the momentum completely flip and the panic start to set in for the Waupun Warriors. The Chargers kept their defensive intensity high getting critical stops and big blocked shots form Zachary Zuleger. Key-made free throws, timely-made baskets, and shut down defense lead to the Chargers on-court celebration as the clock hit zero.
True to form, the Chargers had multiple players in double figures for scoring. Solomon Zarling lead the way with 14 points. Zach Zuleger recorded yet another double-double as he found himself with 13 points and 14 rebounds. With that performance Zach will find himself in the record book for rebounds in a season. He surpassed Jared Henning’s 209 rebounds finding himself currently sitting at 225. Also scoring for the Chargers was Brandon Heckendorf and Jacob Stoltz, each recording 10 points.
The journey is not over for the Chargers- it gets to continue 70 miles west of Jackson at the Kohl Center in Madison. The Chargers were given the #4 seed and face off against #1 seeded Valders, who is coming off a big upset of 53-0 Xavier. No matter the opponent the Chargers will focus on going 1-0. The State Semi final match up is set for Thursday, 3/15, with a 1:35 PM tipoff.
