The Chargers fantastic playoff run came to a heartbreaking end on Thursday against Westfield. KML had allowed only 1 run in their first 3 playoff games, rolling into the Sectional Final. Undefeated Westfield had previously beaten the #2 and #3 ranked Division 3 schools in Wisconsin on their road to this contest. KML managed one hit in the top of the 1st, but that was it. Westfield took the lead in the bottom half by scoring once on a couple of hits and an error. The Chargers, who have made a habit of starting slowly until this playoff run, struck out 3 times in the 2nd to start the game having 6 of the 1st 7 batters strike out. Westfield added to their lead in the 2nd. An error started the inning and it looked like Kettle would get out of the inning unharmed after 2 quick outs, but a homerun gave Westfield a 3-0 lead. The Charger girls could have felt deflated and rolled over, but they started battling back in the 3rd. Kyra Herman walked with 2 outs and stole 2nd base. Sophia Heckendorf followed with her 2nd hit of the game to make it 3-1. The Chargers made their 3rd error in as many innings in the bottom half of the frame, but this time they were able to get out of the inning unscathed. It quickly became a game again in the top of the 4th when Jamie Maas led off with a single and Mikayla Ott followed with a 2 run blast of her own to tie it and Katie Scherf and the defense retired the side on 4 pitches and 3 ground balls. KML got a runner to 2nd base in the top of the 5th, but couldn’t drive in the lead run. A 2 out double scored 2 runs for Westfield in the bottom of the 5th and gave them a 5-3 lead. Ott got the Chargers right back to within 1 run when she led off the 6th with her 2nd homerun of the game. After holding Westfield scoreless, Kettle needed just 1 run to tie the game, but after the 1st 2 girls were retired, they were down to their final out. But once again, they weren’t fazed. Sophia Heckendorf beat out an infield hit for her 3rd hit of the game and Scherf smoked the 2nd pitch she saw into the left-centerfield gap for a double. Sophia scored from 1st. It looked like the game was going to end in the bottom of the 7th when Westfield loaded the bases with only 1 out, but a 5-2-3 double play sent the game into extra innings. Ott was intentionally walked to start the inning. After a stolen base and a passed ball got the lead run to 3rd base, a pop out and a strike out ended their chance. Westfield led off the bottom of the 8th with a bunt base hit and a sacrifice bunt to move her to 2nd. After an intentional walk, the Chargers got the ground ball they were looking for but if found the hole between 2nd and Shortstop. Jordyn Heckendorf charged hard and had a great shot at throwing out the runner at home, but as she got there, the ball took a bad hop when it hit the lip of the grass. She corralled the ball and made a great throw home, but it was a step and a half late.
Unfortunately the Charger run ended just short of a berth at State next weekend in Madison. It was still a fantastic season and the future is still bright with almost every starter returning next season. KML will say goodbye to 4 seniors – Jessica Dippel, Mikayla Ott, Haley Theis, and Anna Weyker. Thank you ladies for your dedication to Charger Fastpitch. We will miss you!
